  4.     DIED. Yves Montand, 70, durable French entertainer who in
  5. later life achieved international film stardom; of a stroke; in
  6. Senlis, France. The Italian-born Montand gained fame as a singer
  7. and protege of his lover Edith Piaf, with whom he appeared in
  8. his first film (Star Without Light). He also co-starred with
  9. Marilyn Monroe (Let's Make Love) and Simone Signoret (The
  10. Crucible), his real-life wife for 34 often tempestuous years.
  11. A longtime left-wing activist who later moderated some of his
  12. views, Montand played an antiright maverick in Costa-Gavras' Z
  13. and won highest acclaim for his role as a scheming peasant in
  14. Claude Berri's two-part film adaptation of Marcel Pagnol's Jean
  15. de Florette and Manon of the Spring. At 67 he became a father
  16. for the first time with the birth of his son by companion Carole
  17. Amiel.
